How long have you been teaching?

Since 2015. I’ve led creative writing courses at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies, Catapult, the University of Iowa, the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio, Write Rhode Island, and Frequency Writers. These include Fiction, Science Fiction & Fantasy, and Creative Nonfiction workshops. I’ve taught both in-person and online, and to all ages (from middle schoolers to adults—including 65+ only workshops).

What are your classes like?

Online classes are synchronous (not pre-recorded). As for the rest: it depends, but there’s always a variety of readings, writing exercises/prompts, discussion, and finally, a workshop critique. You’ll receive feedback on your writing, deadlines that whoosh by, a library of readings and resources, and a supportive community.

How can I find out about future classes?

What is Speculative Fiction? Why do you write Speculative Fiction?

I define speculative fiction broadly, as anything SFF (science fiction & fantasy), horror, or surreal. Essentially the speculative diverges from our world in some way, be it large or small.

That said, my writing generally falls in the literary science fiction camp. See this interview for more. (You can also find an interview about my nonfiction here.)

I got a lot from your class and want to say thank you. Can I get you a gift card?
